The Writing Center

At the Writing Center you can get support for your writing and work on taking next steps with your assignment. You can work with a tutor in-person or online. There is a limited amount of email appointments as well. Tutors are respectful and friendly. You are welcome to come at any stage of writing: we can help you develop a draft or, if you do not have writing yet, we can help you get started. You can work on any writing, not only for English. Many students come to work on personal statements and assignments for different majors.

In-person and Online appointments are great for back-and-forth discussion. Together you will decide on priorities and work on making changes or getting started. Both you and the tutor contribute to the session. You can drop by 105 Grant Hall and we’ll help you make an appointment.

Before using Email tutoring, we recommend you meet with a tutor first through an In-person or Online session to learn more about our tutoring. For Email tutoring, tutors comment on 3 double-spaced pages. When you make an appointment, you would need to provide background on your assignment and priorities. Tutors describe strengths and offer suggestions for improvement.

You can Make 3 Appointments per Week Some students meet with different tutors to get a variety of perspectives. Others follow up with a tutor familiar with their work. Either way, we are happy to see you often!

Academic Support & Achievement Program

The Academic Support and Achievement Program (ASAP) offerings largely follow the undergraduate curriculum of majors in the Applied Health Sciences. Based on demand, this includes most upper-level kinesiology, rehabilitation sciences, disability and human development, and a handful of core math and science classes. We aren’t just a tutoring center but a student hub for undergraduate students within the College of Applied Health Sciences.

Please note that tutoring is offered in-person and online via Blackboard Collaborate. Services are in the format of individual requested and recurring appointments through iAdvise, arranged small groups and review sessions.

Math and Science Learning Center

Achieving Excellence Together!

The Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC) is a welcoming learning environment that provides diverse forms of free academic support to students enrolled in BIOS, CHEM, EAES, MATH, MCS, and PHYS courses at UIC. Through the MSLC, you will find a friendly team of supporters (Peer Leaders/ Learning Assistants, Faculty, Teaching Assistants, Staff) who are here to help you learn as much as you can during your time at UIC and to help you take the next step in your academic career. Our Peer Leaders and Learning Assistants are familiar with the curriculum each semester as they have direct connections with the courses and work together with Faculty. Please bring questions from your classes, homework problem sets, lab reports, and projects to receive personalized support and to learn, together with your Instructors and classmates. We know that in essentially all 100 and 200 level courses (with services provided through the MSLC), that students who utilized the MSLC academic support outperformed their peers who did not participate. Empower yourself to succeed and drop-in any time to take advantage of this wonderful resource! Although most of our support services will be offered in-person, we will continue offering some online sessions (especially evenings and weekends) using the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra and Zoom platforms. We look forward to learning together, virtually and in the MSLC!

For tutoring by Email, when you make an appointment, you can attach up to 3 double-spaced pages of your writing and the tutor will send a response within 24 hours, usually sooner.
